Laser Hair Removal
Candela Laser Technology
We use the newest FDA approved lasers by Candela Laser Corp, the GentleLASE and Gentle YAG are very precise and can be adjusted to the exact parameters that will disable the hair growth cells in the follicle, minimally affecting the surrounding skin, and considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process. By delivering an effective energy beam deep into the tissue, the laser ensures predictable results, patient comfort, and a high degree of safety. Because they both have pre and post cooling devices...they have become the leaders among long pulse lasers worldwide.
Are you a candidate for laser hair removal?
Anyone with dark pigmented hair, men and women are candidates. Laser does not work on blonde, light red, white or gray hairs since they have no melanin and can not absorb the laser light. Skin tone does not matter since we have a light and a dark skinned laser. We can effectively treat all skin tones, even tanned skin. The following skin types are all eligible for laser hair removal.
How does laser hair removal work?
The laser emits a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed by the melanin (hair color). This is very similar to how sunlight will absorb and heat darker objects opposed to light objects. The laser energy is transformed into heat, which travels down the hair shaft and destroys the hair follicle through the dermal papilla (bulb) from where the hair grows. The skin is further protected during laser hair removal treatment by a Dynamic Cooling DeviceTM where cold cryogen mist is sprayed onto the skin cooling the upper layers and providing patients with increased comfort. The procedure can take as little as 2 minutes or up to a couple hours, depending on the area treatment. The treated area may become pink or red within minutes of the treatment, also small red bumps from follicular swelling could appear. This may last from a few minutes to several hours and is relieved with the application of post laser lotions.
How long does a treatment take?
Laser hair removal on smaller areas like the lip, chin, cheeks, underarms, and bikini line can be treated in 5-10 minutes. Medium areas like arms, chest or back take about 30-45 minutes, and large areas like the legs can take 60-90 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
Hair grows in cycles. The number of treatments required depends upon your skin color, coarseness of the hair, and the laser being used.. Everyone will require at least 6-8 treatments as the process is only effective on hair during the early Anagen growing cycle. Repeat sessions will be necessary to treat new follicles when they enter the early growth phase. After completing a series of 6-8 treatments maintanance sessions may be needed for random growth of stray hairs. Discuss with your laser professional about the option of purchasing a lifetime warranty or a discounted cost per maintanace session.
Why does it take so many treatments?
Under normal circumstances hair growth in each hair follicle occurs in a cycle. There are three main phases of the hair growth cycle; A C T = Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. The laser will only work on hairs that are in the Anagen growth stage. So each treatment is only getting a certain percentage of hair (usually about 15-20%) Below is a sample of how a hair grows in cycles
Anagen (active) is the growing phase or when the hair fiber is produced. During anagen, the hair contains an abundance of melanin, the pigment that gives your hair its color. This is the phase during which laser hair removal treatment is most effective. The growth cells in the papilla rapidly divide and produce the hair shaft, which in turn becomes keratinized as it pushes up and out of the follicle into the pore. The laser light will absorb into the dark melanin color of the hair and transfer heat to the dermal papilla (bulb) and destroy it's active growth.
Catagen (club hair) is the period of controlled regression of the hair follicle. This phase is when the lower part of the hair stops growing, but does not shed, and the follicle is reabsorbed. As the catagen phase begins, the bulb detaches from the blood supply and the hair shaft takes on the look of a club. Because the hair has detached itself from the dermal papilla the laser light will not be able to transfer its energy deep enough to destroy the bulb.

What precautions should be taken before and after treatment?
Avoid the sun and tanning beds 4-6 weeks before and after treatment or until your practitioner allows it. You may be out in the sun if a suncreen with SPF 30 or higher is used. (This is only for the GentleLase. With the GentleYag tanning only needs to be avoided for one week before and one week after laser hair removal treatments.) You must avoid electrolysis, bleaching, plucking or waxing hair for 2 weeks prior to treatment. All hair needs to be completely clean shaven before arrival for your treatment unless instructed otherwise. If you have a dark skin type, or are tanning, you should notify your laser specialist and we recommend using the GentleYAG laser which allows the light to penetrate through the dark pigmented skin without doing damage to the skin surface.
Telogen (tired) is the last of the hair growth cycle. In this resting phase, the old hair falls out in preparation for the development of a new anagen hair. Laser is ineffective on Telogen growth hair at this time since the hair has almost exfolited completing from the bulb and out of the skin. After this resting/shedding phase, the follicle can be re-generated and begin growing again. Now it's back in an Anagen phase and is effectively treated with laser.
Why Laser Hair Removal is Best?
There are several different reasons why laser hair removal has become an increasingly popular option for those looking to remove unwanted body hair. “Laser hair removal Louisville” queries on search engines may approach an all-time high by the end of 2014. Many people choose to use laser hair removal treatment for removing unwanted body hair because the process is quick, effective and safe. More and more men are embracing laser treatments to remove unwanted hair on the back, chest and other areas of the body. Many men opt-in to get their body hair thinned-out, opposed to completely removed. Many men and women invest in laser hair removal for professional work-related reasons or to improve relationships in their personal life. The equipment used in the laser procedure may be adjusted to account for the location, thickness and color of the hair being removed. A session may range from a minute up to a half-hour. Laser hair removal treatments are superior to creams and other products because the results are permanent.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Some people prefer laser hair removal because the process is cleaner, and doesn’t require cleaning up any residue thereafter. The treated hair falls out throughout the month following the procedure. Unlike other hair removal products, the laser process has also shown the ability to reduce the propensity for ingrown hair growth as well. The FDA has recognized laser hair removal as a permanent hair reduction procedure since 1997. Patients undergo a series of treatments because the hair grows in cycles that range from four weeks to two months long. Each treatment session can only remove approximately 20-30 percent of the body’s hair due to the nature of theses cycles. Laser skin treatments for removing hair can be described as a precise and efficient solution to a long-term problem millions people experience around the world.
